What Your Anger Style Says About You

Rankd Team · 6 min read

The Four Anger Styles

Aggressive (you explode), passive-aggressive (you punish indirectly), suppressive (you bottle it up), and assertive (you express it directly and constructively). Only one of these is healthy, and most people default to one of the unhealthy three.

Why Your Anger Style Matters

Your anger style is one of the biggest predictors of relationship quality. Aggressive anger destroys trust. Passive-aggressive anger erodes it. Suppressive anger builds resentment until it explodes. Only assertive anger resolves the underlying issue.

How to Change Your Pattern

First, identify which style you default to. Then practice the assertive alternative: 'I feel [emotion] when [behavior] because [impact]. I need [specific request].' It feels unnatural at first, but it's the only anger expression that actually solves problems.
