What You List vs. What Predicts Happiness
When asked to list ideal partner traits, people list attractiveness, humor, intelligence, and ambition. But longitudinal research shows that the traits predicting actual relationship happiness are: emotional stability, kindness, reliability, and growth mindset. There's almost no overlap.
The Height/Income Trap
Specific physical or financial requirements filter out the majority of potentially compatible partners. A requirement for 6'+ eliminates 85% of men. A requirement for $100k+ income eliminates 80% of men under 35. These filters often correlate weakly or not at all with relationship satisfaction.
Building a Better Checklist
Replace specific traits with patterns: how does this person handle disagreement? How do they treat people they don't need anything from? Do they take responsibility for their mistakes? These behavioral patterns predict relationship quality far more reliably than demographic checkboxes.
