Does Money Buy Happiness? What the Data Actually Says

Rankd Team · 6 min read

The $75,000 Myth

The famous 2010 study said happiness plateaus at $75,000. A 2023 study from Matthew Killingsworth found that happiness continues to rise with income well past that threshold — but only for people who were already relatively happy. For unhappy people, more money above $100k made no difference.

What Money Actually Buys

Money buys the absence of financial stress, which is a major happiness factor. It buys time (hiring help, reducing commutes), experiences (travel, dining, entertainment), and freedom (the ability to say no to things you don't want to do). These are real and significant contributors to wellbeing.

The Income Rank Connection

Most people have no idea how their income compares to peers. Finding out can be clarifying — it either reveals that your financial stress is justified by your actual position, or that you're doing better than you felt. Both insights are useful.
