EQ vs. IQ
Emotional intelligence — the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in yourself and others — predicts job performance, relationship satisfaction, and mental health better than IQ does. Yet most people have never measured theirs and assume it's high.
The Four Components
EQ has four components: self-awareness (recognizing your own emotions), self-management (controlling your reactions), social awareness (reading others' emotions), and relationship management (handling interactions skillfully). Most people are strong in one or two and weak in others.
Why People Overestimate Their EQ
People who lack emotional intelligence literally lack the ability to recognize that they lack it — similar to the Dunning-Kruger effect with cognitive ability. The people who most need to improve their EQ are the ones most convinced they don't need to.
